There was no method for checking raw materials,
uniform method of manufacture and storage under pest and
disease free conditions. To improve such situation WHO introduced
GMP [Good Manufacturing Practices], which has been now adopted
by around 200 countries. The GMP attempts to pin point the
existing defects in the medicine manufacturing scene and
guidelines to produce medicine under strict hygienic conditions.

Quality Control
The GMP gives enormous stress on the method of
quality control. It emphasizes the need of having adequate
facilities for the manufacture. It has also been suggested
that the person determining the quality should be related
to manufacturer. Yard sticks are to be made for determining
the quality of both raw materials as well as finished products
Adopting these yard sticks, periodic checks are to be made
at different levels of production. GMP directs the manufacturer
to give adequate attention to the complaints from the users/
common man. These complaints have to be dealt seriously
and recorded and the reason of the complaints should be
investigated, if found unsuitable the product must be withdrawn
from the market and destroyed. Not withstanding these difficulties,
the directions given in GMP are quite welcome for the manufacturers.
Coming from different climatic conditions
the raw materials are hard to be standardized. But the product
being a medicine, meant for curing the disease, some efforts
are to be made for its standardisation. Funds are to be
expended on the research and development of Ayurvedic products
