Exercise according to Doshas

Exercise

We all know that exercise is important in our daily lives, but knowing our body type and exercising accordingly is the right way to do it.

Vata Type:

People with this type of body are slim with fine limbs. Exercises with fast movements and doing light sports for 15 to 20 minutes continuously are right for them. So walking, cycling, dancing, and swimming are some activities that people with Vata-type bodies should opt for. Wintertime is not good for them so they should work out indoors preferably.

Pitta Type:

Having a pitta-type body means such people can exercise for longer hours as their bodies can manage heat production easily. They have moderate to vigorous physique and can easily do swimming as well as climbing, cycling, jogging, and team sports.

Kapha Type:

Having a solid build, people with this body type can do intense and long workout sessions but they usually are a bit lazy. Regular exercise is a must for them which may include long-distance running, rowing, or jogging. Warm-up is necessary before beginning a long-distance running, rowing, or jogging. Warm-up is necessary before beginning a workout for all body types as per Ayurveda including Vata, Pitta, and Kapha body types.

  • Ayurveda recommended time for exercising is 6 am to 10 am which is the Kapha time.
  • Too much or too little exercise should be avoided. You should feel energetic after a workout session.
  • Strength training (surya namaskar, weight lifting), endurance training (jogging, cycling, swimming, fast walking) and flexibility training (yoga, stretching) should be a part of your workouts.
